    niscort

    Gday all..

Ive gathered a lot of inspiration from this forum over the years and have now finally got stuck into my project... Ive got a running thread on a Australian forum, but have been suggested to post over here...

I will just cut and paste most of the important posts and then post updates on both

    hope you like

    20/11/08
Time for a bit of an update... seem the old thread has died in the archive

anyhow... Ill just try and occasionally put up some pics as things progress.. currently have a vehicle modification application form sitting beside the computer, its a daunting form... and apparently i shouldnt have commenced any work, but expects that everything has been designed with addition of sketchs and pictures.. oh well

    pics
    the begining

    engine fitted

then came a rebuild after the donor engine was discovered to be missing some important bearings

car was stored for a few years as I went abroad.. then it saw the light again

    an addition to the family

    didn't last long... survived a day[:p]

    new wheels

that ends to about 6months ago... plently of more to come[]

i drilled a start hole then used some cutters, then a die grinder to the final size... smaller holes were with a hole saw.

a few more progress pics from different stages of things

Ive pretty much completed the rebuild of the new engine.. obviously not everyones cup of tea, being a non ford engine.. and... at the end of the day, it could have been another cosworth with the money its cost...

If so inclined... more detail about the engine build can be found on this "nissan" site... please beware, it has a fair percent of [:o)]'s..

been about a year so far, since i started everything all over again..

have been given the green light by the engineer, with a few minor revisions, so just need to get the approval in concept from the transport dep and full steam ahead, hope to be painted this summer... then at some point, road registered [][][]
    well chuffed

car will be lowish, nothing silly, but there is too much road kill down my way, and ive learen't that lesson... burning rotting flesh is a very unplesant experience.

    18/01/09

christmas has finally passed and I managed to get a weekend in the shed.. bring on version 4 of the rear end [:o)]

gone are the lowering blocks... they are now forsale btw

I have also had enough of beating on the rear guards to gain more clearance, plus my rear track is a tinnny bit over the allowable increase, so I decided to shorten the housing

In the end I took 6mm off a side, pretty simple job really.

And with the wheels now able to roll free, i dropped it back on the ground with some dummy bumpstops... sort of forget how small it is when its always 2feet in the air...

not a fan of rust repairs.. []

after some double checking of the suspension drawings... I found that the rear springs would contact the tyres with one side in bump other in droop... so revised the turrets and moved the mount point 20mm in

started sealing off the boot and harness mounts

made up a plate to seal the interior rear vents off from the boot

    Matsin,

They are from a SAAB 900 or 9000. They are quite a common swap here in Oz as there isn't much options for 4X108 15inch rims.

Such a mean car, its partially the inspiration for my own CA18DET build. Obviously not near as hardcore on the engine side or things (man it looks magnificent been watching it on that silvia site and waaaay back on classicford.mine), but youve gotta start somewhere!

Gagging to see more progress mate.

cheeRS for all the positive comments everyone

using standard 5speed box.. mounts are aftermarket items.. the engine can be mounted with out much modification, but this ends up with the engine sitting rather high and sort of poking between the gap left... you can get the ca lower by cut and shunting the steel sump, fair bit harder with the alloy sr sumps.. and then some people drop the engine crossmember by an inch or so... all of which i didnt really fancy...

Ive sorted mine by reversing the engine crossmember and running a lhd rack upside down and a touch lower on the crossmember... somewhat different, but it works

Thats a suberb build and you're obviously a very talented man with the amount of thought and fabrication thats gone into the project.

Personally I would be interested to see a pic of how you got the car up on end like you did with the hoist? How did you mount it to the car? and did you find that the car swayed about at all? I only ask as I have some sturdy RSJ's running the width of my garage and I was hoping to use them in a similar way.

when you say standard box i take it you mean the one from the nissan not the escort?

also, do you know if the ca sump fits the sr engines?

    good project by the way

funny story that one... I had the car on 4 axle stands, the 2 rear were just on the chassis at the front leaf pickup.. front 2 near the firewall.. both the diff and engine were in the car.. so I day, I decided to drop the engine out under the car, all went well until the last bolt 'popped' out and the front of the car just lifted off the axle stands due to the weight of the diff and up she went... one of those things where you seriously shit yourself. luckly it didnt fall off the rear stands and while it was in that position took advantage of the view and hooked up a chain block to keep it from coming back down. I think i ended up using the other stand to stop it rocking around, maybe even a rope or two as well.

only thing with being on that angle... lifting it up from the front pulls the rear quite a distance.. so you would need the rear to roll until you get the front as high as you want it... then jack the rear up if needed.

    4drmatt,
The sumps are very different between engines. and yes, I hoping the standard nissan gearbox will survive
