Re: Supercharged MK 1
Cool!!!
Where did you get that little lot from?
-
Re: Supercharged MK 1
The charger and cooler are from a Mini Cooper S via Ebay, the water injection imported from the US Ebay and the rest I have custom built to fit.

Re: Supercharged MK 1
So how has the testing gone? What sort of power have you got?

Re: Supercharged MK 1
I haven't had it on a RR, I've just been running it and gradually pushing it harder.
It picks up quicker and goes very well.
I built this instead of buying a Sunbeam Lotus, I hand 1a few years ago, and this is goes much better. The Sunbeam was more resposive than the XE, although fitting some 45's to the XE would have been the answer, the cost of the carbs plus an ignition system would have been alot more than the cost to fit the SC.
It doesn't like very quick throttle changes, but I can live with that.

Re: Supercharged MK 1
how many pounds are u running? Are u using standard internals??
-
Re: Supercharged MK 1
With the standard supercharger and XE bottom pulley, it produces about 5psi boost.
The engine is standard, running well after about 200 miles and picks up alot better than standard.
The tickover is a bit lumpy, but I think thats due to a very slight leek at the intercooler.

I love to crap
Re: Supercharged MK 1
great project!
what management are you using?

Re: Supercharged MK 1
I'm still using the standard XE motronic 2.7, but I'm looking into the Mega Squirt - Jolt systems. If I upgrade the axle will need changing, or I could fit a SC to my 205.

Re: Supercharged MK 1
Any more news on this conversion?

Re: Supercharged MK 1
What sort of news would you like?

Re: Supercharged MK 1
Does it work? Have you got it running smoothly? Power ratings? Cost? Fuel consumption? Have you got to make any further improvements? Anything else you can add.

Re: Supercharged MK 1
It works well, but that depends on what you want it to do!
I only use it for fun on weekends and to do autotests, so I needed a car with good, low down torque to spin around cones etc. The standard XE needed a few revs which is typical of 16 v motors - the SC was a cheap fix.
It runs on the standard XE fuel injection - using the knock and lambda to control the fueling and ignition. The initial flat spots, caused by stamping on the throttle, have virtually been eradicated by changing the plugs. There is a strange 'surging' feeling on full power, as I think the ECU is struggling with the boost.
I havn't measured the power increase, but it picks up much quicker!!!
The cost was peanuts! - £120 for the SC and intercooler (Ebay), £15 drive belt, £20 wide pully alternator, and all the additional work ( pipework & brackets) by me or friends.
As for the fuel consumption, I havn't measured it. I didn't do it for economy. If you drive it economically you should see an improvement, but with the extra grunt that is impossible!
I also added water injection as I was worried about the CR, so during the winter I may lower the CR with some turbo pistons and alter the SC pully sizes to increase the boost from the current 5 PSI.
I'm also looking at the Mega Jolt / Squirt systems to replace the Vauxhall fuel injection, but any more power and the rear suspension / axle will require attention so that will depend on funds !
The suspension and brakes were already modified - Bilsteins and large discs (285 mm from a 306 gti-6 on the front with Bx front brakes on the rear, through a bias pedal box), but the rear will have to be 4 linked for any more power.
